about

everyone has a story

When I was about 5 years old, I wrote a story about a trip with my parents to New York to visit my relatives. My mother wrote down the storyline as I told it and then the two of us illustrated it. It was titled “Blair’s Big Book”. It didn’t follow any linear structure (there were some fantastic leaps of physics and the space-time continuum), but it was my first foray into storytelling.

Ever since then I have been interested in finding and revealing stories wherever I go. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that there are a multitude of ways of telling where we’ve come from and where we’re going, be it through the written or spoken word, on the stage or film, or perhaps a visual means.

How do you tell your story? I can help you express it through your brand, website, print and social media in a way that will engage your community, be it stakeholders in the company or your neighbours down the street.

Before anything is done though, we need to think about a few key points:

  • What is the structure of your story?
  • What is the right medium to tell the story?
  • Who do you want to tell your story to and have it be retold and retold?

And when you’re ready, feel free to get in touch to discuss further.

my story

It’s an ongoing journey. Each chapter seems to be unrelated to the last at first, but they are all intertwined.

BFdesign came about in 2007, inspired by a family of start-ups, as I wanted to try my hand at something I’ve always had an interest in. It has been one of the most rewarding choices I’ve made to date.

Having grown up and observed my parents who ran the successful firm, Spencer Francey Peters for over 30 years, design is in my genes.

Prior to working as a graphic designer, I studied the art of playwriting at the National Theatre School of Canada. Located in Montreal, I spent 3 years honing my understanding of storytelling and communication using the written word and dramatic structure. As Montreal is heavily influenced by its European roots it afforded me the chance to immerse myself in a different culture from English Canada – a culture who appreciates a good clean design aesthetic, one that I have come to greatly admire and aspire to in my own work.

My love for design fully developed during my tenure at the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA). In my role as the Director of Communications and Membership I was able to grow as a designer while I helped to rebrand the organization as well as create and implement a city-wide arts marketing campaign aimed at encouraging Torontonians to go out and see live theatre. One of my goals when I embarked on my own adventure was to provide design services for the cultural industry in Toronto and help elevate its presence within the city.

After 3 years of gaining experience and developing my design skills, I took my leave from TAPA and began what is now BFdesign.

Who knows what the next chapter will bring, but I look forward to it!
